DIAMONDBACKS 5, CUBS 4

-

1-2 punch

First baseman Anthony Rizzo and catcher Willson Contreras hit first and second in manager David Ross’ lineup, and Contreras got the offense started by lining a first-inning solo home run onto the lawn in right-center field to give the Cubs a 1-0 lead.

Rizzo added a blast of his own, hitting a towering tworun homer in the third inning to extend the lead.

Sunday not a fun day

Right-hander Adbert Alzolay got roughed up in his second outing of the spring. Alzolay entered in the third after starter Jake Arrieta tossed two scoreless innings. The D-backs made lots of hard contact against the young righty with hits of 104, 107, 108 and 112 mph in his 1⅓ innings.

Alzolay surrendered five runs, four hits and two walks and had no strikeouts.

‘‘He’s a guy who, from the get-go, I can tell that he wants it,’’ Arrieta said about Alzolay last month. ‘‘There’s no doubt in my mind. He’s focused, he asks a lot of questions and you can tell he loves the game. He loves to pitch . ... If I can help him escalate his career even a little bit, that makes this entire organization that much better.’’

Underwood traded

The Cubs acquired first baseman Shendrik Apostel from the Pirates for right-handed pitcher Duane Underwood Jr. The Cubs designated Underwood for assignment last week to make room for reliever Ryan Tepera on the 40-man roster.

Apostel, 20, signed out of Curacao in 2017, hit .252 with 13 doubles, 11 home runs and 45 RBI for the Pirates’ Dominican Summer League team in 2019.
