NCAA modifies rules to speed up multiple football OTs

-

Beginning with the 2021 season, college football teams will have to go for two points after touchdowns starting with the second overtime period, and beginning with the third overtime, teams will run alternating two-point plays from the 3-yard line — a shootout that currently doesn’t start until the fifth overtime.

The NCAA playing rules oversight panel on Thursday approved a proposal made last month by the playing rules committee to tweak the overtime format. The recommendation was based on player safety and is intended to reduce the number of plays it takes for a winner to be determined.

Under the new rules, teams can still choose whether to kick the point after touchdown or try for a two-point conversion in the first overtime.

The playing rules panel also approved recommendations to permanently extend the sideline team area to the 20-yard lines from the 25-yard lines and supported a proposal to allow schools and conferences to request postgame video review of instances in which a team is suspected of feigning injuries to slow its opponent. In addition, officials in 2021 will be told to emphasize rules against flagrant uniform violations, taunting opponents and coaches coming onto the field to argue.

MLB Mariners pull off rare feat in Boston

Mitch Haniger hit a three-run homer in the 10th inning moments after Sam Haggerty’s go-ahead double as the Mariners rallied past the host Red Sox 7-3 despite getting just three hits. The Mariners are the first major-league team since the Athletics in 1994 to be held to three hits or fewer and score seven or more runs.

Haggerty made it 4-3 with his double off Darwinzon Hernandez

(0-1) — the Mariners’ first hit since

Ty France’s tying, two-run double against Nick Pivetta with two outs in the fifth that snapped the righthander’s no-hit bid. Haniger, who walked twice, came up later in the 10th and belted a shot out to right-center for his fifth homer of the season.

NBA Ankle sprain, not break, for Young

Hawks guard Trae Young, the team’s top scorer, will miss home games against the Heat on Friday and the Bucks on Sunday because of a sprained left ankle. X-rays were negative after he turned the ankle in the third quarter Wednesday in an overtime loss at New York.

† Anthony Davis was rusty, scoring four points while missing eight of 10 shots in 17 minutes in the Lakers’ 115-110 loss to the host Mavericks. He had missed the previous 30 games with right calf and heel issues.
