Yanks have seven positives on staff

-

The Yankees confirmed seven COVID-19 positives on their coaching and support staff, manager Aaron Boone announced Wednesday.

The new positives include pitching coach Matt Blake. The Yankees announced Tuesday that third-base coach Phil Nevin and first-base coach Reggie Willits had tested positive for COVID-19.

Six of the seven people who have tested positive are asymptomatic, Boone said. All seven people who tested positive have been vaccinated for COVID-19.

In addition, shortstop Gleyber Torres, who also has been vaccinated, was held out of the lineup in Wednesday night’s 1-0 win over the Rays out of an “abundance of caution” while the team awaits test results. Boone said Torres tested positive for COVID-19 in December.

In game action, Gerrit Cole struck out 12 and allowed four hits in eight scoreless innings in the 1-0 victory over the Rays. Cole (5-1) has five starts this season of at least 10 strikeouts and no walks to break Mike Mussina’s single-season team record set in 2001. Aaron Hicks had a sacrifice fly in the seventh inning for the lone run of the game.

Brewers 4, Cardinals 1

Travis Shaw hit a tiebreaking double and Avisail Garcia added a two-run homer in the eighth inning as host Milwaukee capitalized on some good fortune to end St. Louis’ four-game winning streak.

Brandon Woodruff struck out 10 and allowed one run and just three hits and one walk in 7‰ innings for the Brewers.

Brewers ace Corbin Burnes, who says he tested positive for the coronavirus last month but remained asymptomatic, is expected to start Thursday in his first appearance since April 26.

Mets 7, Orioles 1

Matt Harvey was greeted warmly by Mets fans in his return to Citi Field and harshly by New York’s hitters. Harvey pitched against his former team for the first time and allowed Kevin Pillar’s two-run triple in a three-run second inning that carried the Mets to their seventh consecutive win.

Phillies 5, Nationals 2 (10 inn.)

Rhys Hoskins hit a go-ahead single in the 10th inning as Philadelphia rallied to beat host Washington. The Phillies have won seven of their last nine games.
