Anderson, Bucs end Brewers’ win streak

-

Tyler Anderson pitched seven sparkling innings and the Pirates snapped the Brewers’ 11-game winning streak with a 2-0 victory Sunday in Pittsburgh. Anderson had gone eight starts without a win since May 9, when he beat the Cubs at Wrigley Field. The Brewers managed just three hits off Anderson (4-8). The left-hander struck out six and walked two while throwing 93 pitches.

Kevin Newman homered, and Wilmer Difo had an RBI double for the Pirates.

The Brewers’ streak was the second-longest in franchise history. The Brewers won their first 13 games in 1987.

‘‘It was incredible through this stretch,’’ Brewers manager Craig Counsell said. ‘‘Bullpen guys have done a fabulous job. The starters, just rock-solid, delivering every time out. Eleven-game streaks, everybody on the roster has done something to help us during this streak, for sure. It feels like a stretch where everybody carried the load.”

The Brewers (51-34) are seven games ahead of the Reds and 8½ ahead of the Cubs.

Angels 6, Orioles 5

Shohei Ohtani hit his major-league-leading 31st homer in the third, and Juan Lagares ended it with a two-run double in the ninth for the host Angels.

Ohtani’s 459-foot solo shot off Thomas Eshelman to straightaway center was his 14th homer in 17 games, and it tied Hideki Matsui’s record (set in 2004) for homers in a season by a Japanese slugger.

Ohtani’s total is tied with Christian Yelich (2019, Brewers), Jose Bautista (2011, Blue Jays) and David Ortiz (2006, Red Sox) for third-most before the AllStar break over the last 20 seasons behind Chris Davis (37 with the Orioles in 2013) and Albert Pujols (32 with the Cardinals in 2009). Barry Bonds is the all-time leader with 39 for the Giants in 2001.

Dodgers 5, Nationals 1

Albert Pujols hit a go-ahead RBI single as a pinch hitter in the seventh inning, and the visiting Dodgers completed a seven-game season sweep of the Nationals. With 2,132 RBI, Pujols trails only Babe Ruth (2,214) and Hank Aaron (2,297).

The Dodgers have won a season-high nine consecutive games since getting no-hit on June 24 by the Cubs. (The Cubs have lost all nine games since that no-hitter).

Padres 11, Phillies 1

Manny Machado hit a two-run homer in the first inning and a three-run shot in the third, both off Vince Velasquez, to lead the visiting Padres. It was Machado’s 28th career multihomer game. Per ESPN, the only players with more over the last 10 seasons are Giancarlo Stanton, Nelson Cruz and Edwin Encarnacion (all with 30).
