Bears activate NT Goldman from covid list
Ten days after being put on the reserve/ COVID-19 list, the Bears activated nose tackle Eddie Goldman on Friday. Goldman was one of four players — including linebacker Christian Jones, tackle Elijah Wilkinson and snapper Patrick Scales — put on the reserve list Aug. 3.
The timelines of their return suggest all four were unvaccinated. Unvaccinated players who test positive must isolate for 10 days — exactly like Goldman did — and can only return once they are no longer symptomatic.
NFL rules state unvaccinated players must isolate for five days if they were determined to be close contacts of an infected person. Wilkinson and Jones said they were close contacts. The two, along with Scales, were activated Aug. 9.
It’s unclear whether Goldman will play in the exhibition opener Saturday. Coach Matt Nagy said his starters will play eight-to-10 snaps against the Dolphins.
Goldman, who sat out last season because of coronavirus concerns, hasn’t played in a game since the end of the 2019 season.
The Bears also waived receiver Thomas Ives, who attended Hinsdale Central. Ives had been on the practice squad the last two years.
NFL suspends RB Guice six games
Former Washington Football Team running back Derrius Guice was suspended for six games for violating the NFL’s personalconduct policy.
Guice was arrested last August in Virginia on three charges of assault and battery, stemming from three separate domestic violence incidents involving his then-girlfriend early in 2020. He allegedly pushed the woman to the ground on three different occasions and was also accused of strangulation. Guice was released and has not played in the NFL since.
This and that
The Harris County (Texas) District Attorney’s office reportedly has launched a grand jury investigation into Texans star quarterback Deshaun Watson.
Former Bears quarterback Matt Barkley completed 5 of 8 passes for 54 yards and a touchdown in the Titans’ 23-3 preseasonopening win against the Falcons.
Running back Dion Lewis, who played eight seasons and won a Super Bowl with the Patriots, is retiring from the NFL.
