Jags release Tebow, ending comeback bid
The Jaguars waived Tim Tebow, parting with the 2007 Heisman Trophy winner who switched from quarterback to tight end in hopes of rejuvenating his pro football career.
“We knew that was an uphill battle for Tim,” said coach Urban Meyer, who recruited Tebow to nearby Florida. “Players loved him, locker room loved him, but it was the right thing [to do].”
Tebow’s blocking ranged from awkward to awful in Jacksonville’s preseason opener against Cleveland on his 34th birthday. The polarizing player went viral for two botched attempts on the opening drive of the third quarter Saturday night, the second one more egregious than the first.
Tebow also failed to record a catch against the Browns and got no snaps on special teams. Meyer said Tebow’s play lacked consistency, especially in tackling. And if Tebow were going to make Jacksonville’s 53-man roster, he needed to be a special-teams contributor.
The Seahawks reportedly signed Jamal Adams to a four-year, $72 million extension that makes him the NFL’s highest-paid safety. Adams’ deal has a $20 million signing bonus and includes $38 million guaranteed. Adams, a three-time Pro Bowl selection, set the NFL single-season record for sacks by a defensive back last season with 9½ in 12 games.
Deshaun Watson didn’t practice again, but Texans coach David Culley says the quarterback isn’t injured. “Deshaun is here,” Culley said. “Again, every day he’s here, he comes in, and he works. He does what we ask him to do, and he’s here every day and he’s doing fine.” The Packers are bringing back Jake Dolegala for quarterback depth. Aaron Rodgers is not expected to play in the preseason, and Jordan Love is dealing with an injury to his throwing shoulder. The Lions released long snapper Don Muhlbach after 17 seasons. The Saints cut former Bears cornerback Prince Amukamara. The 49ers waived quarterback Josh Rosen after his struggles in training camp. Steelers receiver Chase Claypool suffered a “minor ankle sprain” in practice.
