Osaka ousted from u.s. open

-

Naomi Osaka’s title defense at the U.S. Open ended in the third round with a 5-7, 6-7 (2), 6-4 loss to Leylah Fernandez, an 18-year-old from Canada who is ranked 73rd and never had been this far in Grand Slam competition.

The No. 3-seeded Osaka threw her racket in frustration during a second-set tiebreak. She came in with a 16-match winning streak at majors and four career trophies, all on hard courts. But this was her first Slam tournament since she pulled out of the French Open before the second round to take a mental health break. She also sat out Wimbledon before participating in the Tokyo Olympics.

Also on the women’s side, Angelique Kerber won a matchup of previous Open champions when she beat Sloane Stephens 5-7, 6-2, 6-3 to reach the fourth round.

On the men’s side, No. 3 seed Stefanos Tsitsipas, who was booed by fans and criticized throughout the Open for his lengthy bathroom breaks, suffered a stunning third-round loss to Spanish teenager Carlos Alcaraz, 6-3, 4-6, 7-6 (2), 0-6, 7-6 (5).
