Maddon: Trout likely done for ’21

-

Angels manager Joe Maddon said Wednesday he would be very surprised if outfielder Mike Trout played again this season.

The three-time AL MVP injured his right calf running the bases May 17 and had a setback last month, but he has left open the possibility of returning this year. Trout has been trying to come back this year, but he experienced soreness in his calf after running the bases on Aug.

28. A chuckling Maddon called his comments on Trout an “unofficial statement,” not wanting to jump in front of the star slugger in ruling him out, but he indicated there just isn’t enough time left for him to play again.

“I watch him do his work and it’s been the same. The guy is like so wanting to be out there,” Maddon said. “You watch him in the dugout every night, he’s on every pitch. My God, he’s in on every pitch.”

The Angels haven’t made the playoffs since 2014.

Blue Jays 6, Rays 3

Bo Bichette homered and matched his careerhigh with five RBI and Robbie Ray fanned 13 over seven innings to claim the major-league strikeout lead to lead the host Blue Jays. Ray (12-5), who allowed one run and four hits to win his fourth straight decision, raised his season total to 233 strikeouts, passing Yankees ace Gerrit Cole (224) and the Phillies’ Zack Wheeler (225).

Vladimir Guerrero Jr. doubled twice and scored twice, and Teoscar Hernández added an RBI single. The Blue Jays improved to 13-2 in September.

Cardinals 11, Mets 4

Paul Goldschmidt and Nolan Arenado each hit one of St. Louis’ four homers, and the Cardinals flashed some fantastic outfield defense in beating the host Mets for their fifth consecutive victory. Harrison Bader homered, drove in three runs and made a timely grab at the center-field fence to help Jon Lester improve to 9-1 against the Mets.

The Brewers’ magic number to win the National League Central remained at five after a 4-1 loss to the host Tigers. The tickets were given away via the team’s website on a first-come, first-serve basis.
