ILLINOIS FALLS TO MARYLAND ON LATE FG
Joseph Petrino hit a 32-yard field goal as time expired to give Maryland a 20-17 victory over Illinois on Friday night at Memorial Stadium in Champaign.
The Illini tied the game at 10 with 6:15 left in the third quarter as Josh McCray scored on a 38-yard touchdown run.
Casey Washington scored from the goal line to put Illinois (1-3, 1-1 Big Ten) up 17-10 early in the fourth quarter.
But Maryland (3-0, 1-0) came back to tie the game as Taulia Tagovailoa connected with Tayon Fleet-Davis for a 10yard touchdown pass with 2:13 remaining.
LOUISVILLE 42, UCF 35
Jaylin Alderman returned an interception off a tipped pass for a 66-yard touchdown with 13 seconds remaining, giving the host Cardinals a thrilling victory over the Knights.
UCF appeared primed to win the backand-forth affair after intercepting Louisville’s Malik Cunningham off a deflection on the previous play for possession at the Cardinals’ 41-yard line with under a minute left. But Alderman was there to grab a tip of Dillon Gabriel’s pass on the next snap, then found room down the right sideline for the touchdown to spark a delirious celebration for Louisville (2-1).
UCF (2-1) attempted several laterals on the game’s final play before being penalized for an illegal forward pass.
Cunningham ran for two touchdowns and threw for another for Louisville. He was 23-for-38 passing for 265 yards and rushed 13 times for 99 yards.
AAC EYEING MOUNTAIN West TO EXPAND
The American Athletic Conference is settling on a handful of expansion candidates that likely will kick off the next round of realignment at the Group of Five level, CBS Sports reported.
Reacting to the Big 12’s raid of Cincinnati, Houston and UCF, the AAC has recruited a group of schools that includes Air Force, Boise State, Colorado State, San Diego State and UAB, according to sources.
