DePaul stays hot vs. Big Ten
David Jones scored 22 points and Javon Freeman-Liberty scored 19 with nine rebounds and DePaul held off Rutgers 73-70 on Thursday night at Wintrust Arena.
DePaul (3-0) has won five of its last six games against Big Ten opponents.
Jones made two foul shots with 25 seconds left to give the Blue Demons a three-point lead. Unable to get a shot off, Rutgers used its final timeout with 11 seconds to go.
Geo Baker came off a screen, but his contested three-pointer bounced off the back of the rim. Brandon Johnson secured the rebound for DePaul and was immediately fouled. He missed two foul shots with 3.8 seconds left. Aundre Hyatt rebounded, but his desperation heave never made it to halfcourt.
Ron Harper Jr. had 19 points and 11 rebounds to lead Rutgers (3-1).
Northwestern 82, Fairleigh Dickinson 46
Ryan Young scored 20 points and Pete Nance added 19 points and 11 rebounds as the Wildcats remained undefeated with a win at Welsh-Ryan Arena in Evanston.
Northwestern (4-0) is off to its best start since 2014-15.
Young was 6-for-8 from the floor and made all eight of his free throws. Nance was 7-for-8 shooting and had his second double-double of the season. The Wildcats shot 53% (29for-55) from the field and made 10 of their 20 three-point attempts.
Xavier 71, Ohio State 65
Jack Nunge had 14 points and 14 rebounds, and the host Musketeers led wire-to-wire in knocking off the No. 19 Buckeyes (3-1).
Calhoun retires from St. Joseph
Jim Calhoun, who led UConn to three national titles, retired again, this time from Division III Saint Joseph.
