Bears cut Mack’s brother

- Sun-Times staff and wires

The Bears cut linebacker Ledarius Mack and signed six players who participated in their rookie minicamp on a tryout basis last weekend.

The players signed were: Northern Arizona defensive end Carson Taylor, Ball State linebacker Christian Albright, Charlotte safety Jon Alexander, Temple long snapper Antonio Ortiz, Western Michigan safety AJ Thomas and Ohio running back De’Montre Tuggle.

Mack, the brother of former Bears linebacker Khalil Mack, was the only veteran among the six players cut. The Bears signed him as an undrafted free agent following the 2020 NFL Draft. He spent most of the 2020 and 2021 seasons on the practice squad but played in three games last season (24 snaps on defense).

The other players cut were rookies signed as undrafted free agents following the draft: Ohio State running back Master Teague, Southern Illinois wide receiver Landon Lenoir, Utah State wide receiver Savon Scarver, Miami safety Amari Carter and Purdue linebacker Jaylan Alexander.

Miss. sues Favre over welfare misspending

The Mississippi Department of Human Services sued retired NFL quarterback Brett Favre and several other people and businesses to try to recover millions of misspent welfare dollars that were intended to help some of the poorest people in the U.S.

State Auditor Shad White last year demanded repayment of $77 million of misspent welfare funds, including $1.1 million paid to Favre, who lives in Mississippi.

White said Favre was paid for speeches but did not show up. Favre has repaid the money, but White said in October that Favre still owed $228,000 in interest.

Dolphins to sign veteran RB Michel

Looking for a boost in their running game, the Dolphins are planning to sign former Patriots and Rams running back Sony Michel, according to sources.

Michel will join a crowded backfield in a new-look offense under first-year coach Mike McDaniel. Raheem Mostert and Chase Edmonds signed earlier this offseason, joining holdovers Myles Gaskin and Salvon Ahmed.

Michel, 27, rushed for 845 yards and scored five touchdowns (four rushing, one receiving) for the Super Bowl-champion Rams last season.

Giants cut CB Bradberry

The Giants released veteran cornerback James Bradberry. A starter for the team the last two seasons, including making the Pro Bowl in 2020, Bradberry is a salary-cap casualty. He would have been a $21.9 million cap hit, so cutting him will save about $10 million. The team can designate him a post-June 1 release and save another $1.5 million on the cap for 2022.

Other roster moves

The Lions signed No. 2 overall pick Aidan Hutchinson to a four-year, $35.7 million rookie contract that includes a $23 million signing bonus, according to NFL Network.

◆ The Packers signed free-agent linebacker Kobe Jones.

◆ The Raiders signed veteran linebacker Kenny Young.

This and that

Washington Commanders coach Ron Rivera, who had cancer and made a full recovery, was selected as the 2022 George Halas Award recipient. The Halas Award is given to an NFL player, coach or staff member who overcomes adversity to succeed.

◆ The Ravens are interested in former Browns and Dolphins receiver Jarvis Landry, NFL Network reported.
