Astros’ Odorizzi suffers leg injury

- Sun-Times wires

Astros right-hander Jake Odorizzi collapsed running to cover first base in the fifth inning Monday night against the Red Sox and was taken off the Fenway Park field on a stretcher.

Odorizzi, who entered the game with a 15‰ inning shutout streak, appeared to twist his left leg awkwardly on the delivery to Kike Hernandez. When he turned to cover first base, he took a step and then sprawled out, face down, on the grass.

He remained there after the out was recorded, and Astros staff rushed to tend to him. He was loaded onto a stretcher and wheeled off. The team said he had ‘‘lower left leg discomfort.’’

Odorizzi was 3-2 with a 3.13 ERA this season. The Red Sox led 2-1 when he left the game.

Yanks’ Cortes off Twitter

Yankees left-hander Nestor Cortes said he deactivated his Twitter account after screenshots surfaced Sunday of tweets from a decade ago that included racial slurs. Cortes appeared to be quoting rap lyrics in at least some of the tweets, and he did not seem to be using the words to demean anyone directly.

“It’s not acceptable,’’ Cortes said before the Yankees’ 6-2 victory against the host Orioles. ‘‘I think I could have managed myself and said stuff differently.”

Cortes went eight innings Sunday to earn the win in the Yankees’ 5-1 victory against the host White Sox.

On Monday, the Yankees’ Anthony Rizzo hit his 10th homer of the season. The Orioles’ Anthony Santander hit two solo homers; The Orioles are 0-6 in games in which Santander has multiple homers.

Mariners missing two pitchers in Canada

The Mariners put relief pitcher Drew Steckenrider on the restricted list, while starting pitcher Robbie Ray remained on the active roster but did not accompany the Mariners to Toronto.

The moves likely indicate that the players are unvaccinated are were left behind to comply with Canadian vaccination rules. By putting Steckenrider on the restricted list, the Mariners are able to call up a player, but it costs the pitcher $51,099 in salary. Ray saves $346,154 by not being put on the restricted list.

This and that

† Former Cub Tommy La Stella was activated by the Giants and made his season debut against the Rockies as the team’s designated hitter.

† Rockies starter Antonio Senzatela left the game against the Giants with a back injury after throwing a warm-up pitch in the third inning.
