Orioles’ Harvey banned 60 games
Orioles pitcher Matt Harvey was suspended 60 games without pay for violating MLB’s Joint Drug Prevention and Treatment Program.
Harvey admitted he and former Angels teammate Tyler Skaggs provided each other with drugs during the February trial of former Angels communications director Eric Kay, who was found guilty of supplying a fentanyl-laced opioid to that resulted in Skaggs’ death in 2019.
The former All-Star with the Mets was given immunity from criminal prosecution for his testimony in the trial. However, the deal did not preclude MLB from taking action against him.
Harvey, 33, pitched last season for the Orioles and re-signed with the team in April as a minorleague free agent. He has since been working out at the team’s extended spring-training facility in Sarasota, Florida.
Brewers’ Mejia suspended 80 games for PEDs
Brewers pitcher J.C. Mejia was suspended for 80 games after a positive test for the performanceenhancing substance Stanozolol, the second Brewers player disciplined this season under MLB’s drug program. The penalty comes after catcher Pedro Severino was suspended for 80 games on April 5 following a positive test for the performance-enhancing substance Clomiphene.
Eovaldi allows five homers in one inning
Red Sox starter Nathan Eovaldi became the third pitcher in major-league history to allow five home runs in one inning in a 13-4 loss to the Astros. Eovaldi lasted just 1⅔ innings, allowing eight hits and six earned runs. In the second inning, he allowed homers to Yuli Gurriel, Michael Brantley, Jeremy Pena, Kyle Tucker and Yordan Alvarez as Houston raced out to a 9-1 lead. The Astros set a franchise mark for home runs in an inning and tied a major-league record.
