Shaqiri MLS’ highest-paid player

Fire midfielder Xherdan Shaqiri is Major League Soccer’s highest-paid player with a guaranteed compensati­on of $8.15 million, according to figures released Tuesday by the MLS Players Associatio­n.

The 30-year-old Swiss internatio­nal, who joined the Fire this season from Lyon, broke Zlatan Ibrahimovi­c’s league record of $7.2 million with the LA Galaxy in 2019.

Javier “Chicharito” Hernandez of the LA Galaxy was second, with the Mexico internatio­nal guaranteed $6 million.

✦ The Fire’s Gabriel Slonina, an 18-yearold viewed as a goalkeeper of the future for the U.S. national team, was listed on Poland’s 39-man roster ahead of four Nations League matches next month.

NBA Butler scores 41 as Heat take Game 1

Jimmy Butler scored 41 points, and the host Heat turned things around with a huge third quarter on the way to beating the short-handed Celtics 118-107 in Game 1 of the Eastern Conference finals. The Heat outscored the Celtics 39-14 in the third. Butler had 17 in the quarter, outscoring the Celtics by himself in those 12 minutes.

Jayson Tatum had 29 points for the Celtics, who were without starters Marcus Smart (foot) and Al Horford (health and safety protocols).

Lightning strike first against Panthers

Pierre-Edouard Bellemare scored the goahead goal early in the third period, Andrei Vasilevski­y remained red-hot with 34 saves and the Lightning topped the host Panthers 4-1 in Game 1 of an Eastern Conference semifinal series. Florida struggled on the power play again, going scoreless in three tries. But Tampa Bay cashed in three of its six chances.

FOOTBALL XFL to air on ESPN, Disney platforms

Starting next year, the XFL will have all its regular-season games and playoffs air on ESPN and other networks owned by The Walt Disney Company as part of a multiyear agreement.
