Sox name minor-league managers
Justin Jirschele (Triple-A Charlotte), Lorenzo Bundy (Double-A Birmingham), Guillermo Quiroz (High-A Winston-Salem), Patrick Leyland (Low-A Kannapolis) and Danny Gonzalez (Arizona Complex League Sox) will manage the White Sox’ minorleague teams in 2023, the team said Tuesday in announcing its player-development staff.
All managers moved up one level from 2022. Leyland, 32, is the son of Jim Leyland.
Former Sox outfielder Nicky Delmonico (hitting coach) and right-hander Danny Farquhar (pitching coach) were promoted from Winston-Salem to Birmingham, and former left-hander Donnie Veal was promoted from rehab pitching coach to assistant pitching coordinator.
Blake Hickman was named pitching coach at Kannapolis. A graduate of the White Sox Amateur City Elite (ACE) program and Simeon who pitched in 50 minorleague games for the Sox from 2017-18, Hickman will make his coaching debut.
Cubs give Duffey, Holloway minor deals
The Cubs announced Tuesday that they signed right-handed pitcher Tyler Duffey and Jordan Holloway to minor-league contracts with invitations to major-league spring training.
Duffey, 27, adds a veteran arm to the Cubs’ bullpen depth. Over the course of eight seasons with the Twins, Duffey has posted a 4.57 ERA. He’s a couple years removed from putting up standout strikeout numbers in 2019 (34.5% strikeout rate) and 2020 (33.7%), but the Cubs have had success taking chances with several bounceback candidates in the bullpen each year.
Holloway, 26, is coming off of an August arthroscopic surgery on his right elbow. He missed much of last season due to injury. Holloway, a 6-6 presence on the mound, has made 15 major-league appearances over the course of three seasons with the Marlins.
This and that
Rays infielder Yandy Diaz avoided arbitration by agreeing to a three-year, $24 million contract.
The Blue Jays signed pitcher Chad Green to a two-year, $8.5 million deal. The Dodgers re-signed pitcher Tony Gonsolin to a two-year, $6.65 million deal.
