Fangio draws assistant to Dolphins
Veteran NFL coach Vic Fangio was introduced as the Dolphins’ new defensive coordinator at the club’s training facility Monday. Fangio replaces Josh Boyer, who was not retained by coach Mike McDaniel after three seasons with the club.
“I think the Dolphins have a good thing going here,” Fangio said. “There are good components of the coaching staff led by Mike that made it intriguing to join. I still have a lot of coaching left in me. It’s who I am and what I enjoy doing.”
Fangio’s hiring already is attracting assistants from other teams. Chargers defensive coordinator Renaldo Hill, who worked with Fangio with the Bears and Broncos, will join the Dolphins’ defensive staff as a defensive backs coach/passinggame coordinator.
Chargers coach Brandon Staley allowed Hill to get out of his contract out of respect for Hill and Fangio, under whom Staley served as an assistant for three seasons from 2017 to ’19 with the Bears and Broncos. Hill worked as a defensive backs coach under Fangio with the Broncos in 2019 and ’20.
Fangio recently served as a consultant to Eagles coach Nick Sirianni while the team prepared for the NFC Championship Game and Super Bowl.
Chargers promoting Ansley to DC
The Chargers will promote secondary coach Derrick Ansley to defensive coordinator and Tommy Donatell to secondary coach, ESPN reported.
Ansley, 41, spent the last two seasons as the Chargers’ secondary coach. This will be his first opportunity as an NFL defensive coordinator, a position he held at the University of Tennessee for two seasons. Staley is expected to continue calling plays.
Colts to hire Jags’ Cooter as OC
NFL assistant Jim Bob Cooter reportedly is expected to be named the Colts’ offensive coordinator. Cooter, 38, recently was the Jaguars’ passing-game coordinator. Colts coach Shane Steichen and Cooter have some recent history together. Cooter served as an offensive consultant for Steichen with the Eagles in 2021.
