Chiefs elevate Nagy to OC

-

Matt Nagy was the Chiefs’ offensive coordinator before he joined the Bears. Now he is again.

The Chiefs on Friday promoted Nagy to coordinator to replace Eric Bieniemy, whose contract expired after their Super Bowl victory against the Eagles on Feb. 12. He was named the Commanders’ coordinator this week.

Nagy was fired by the Bears after four years and decided to re-join Chiefs coach Andy Reid as the team’s quarterbacks coach, helping Patrick Mahomes to MVP and Super Bowl MVP honors this season.

Standing in a victorious Super Bowl locker room earlier this month, Nagy told the Sun-Times that he made it a point to “cherish” the season.

“We felt like we were getting to that point [of reaching the Super Bowl], and then I left to go to Chicago,” he said then. “We tried to build that culture back up and get winning in that program over [in Chicago].”

It’s unclear what say Nagy will have in play-calling. Reid traditionally has handled those duties.

Fire land veteran Kamara for cash

The Fire acquired forward Kei Kamara from CF Montreal for the 2023 season. In exchange, Montreal will receive $250,000 in general allocation money split equally across the ’23 and ’24 seasons. The club also could receive an additional $150,000 in conditional money if certain performance-based incentives are met.

A 16-year MLS veteran, Kamara has played in 391 regular-season matches, logging 313 starts and 28,668 minutes, scoring 139 goals and registering 54 assists. His goals rank as the third-most in MLS history, and Kamara has the most goals among active players.

GOLF kirk cards 62 at Honda Classic

About 7,200 rounds have been played at the Honda Classic since it moved to PGA National in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, 17 years ago, and only two were better than the one turned in by Chris Kirk.

Kirk shot an 8-under 62 in the second round, moving him to 9 under for the

week and one shot behind Justin Suh (64) at the midway point. Kirk had an eagle and six birdies, hitting 16 greens and taking advantage of no wind blowing in the morning — very rare for PGA National.

“Usually we’re playing for 15-, 20-plus yards of hurt going into the wind shots, and 15, 20 yards of help on downwind shots,” Kirk said.

Suh had four consecutive birdies on holes 8 through 11, rolling in putts from 5, 15, 25 and 30 feet in that span, to post a 36-hole total of 10-under 130.

† Natthakritta Vongtaveelap closed with six birdies on the back nine to take a one-shot lead over Maja Stark after a 7-under 65 in the second round at the LPGA Thailand in Pattaya.

MISCELLANEOUS

Wolves top Griffins in overtime

Max Lajoie scored twice and Anttoni Honka notched the winning goal in overtime as the surging Wolves (21-23-32) skated to a 5-4 road victory over the Grand Rapids Griffins (21-25-2-2). The Wolves have won six of their last eight.

† Giannis Antetokounmpo left late in the first quarter with a right knee issue to spoil his return from a sprained wrist, but the host Bucks still trounced the Heat 12899 for their 13th consecutive victory.

† Andy Murray advanced to the final of the Qatar Open in Doha, where he will meet Daniil Medvedev.
