Mayer, Shannon lead Illini past Wolverines

Matthew Mayer scored 24 points, Terrence Shannon Jr. added 21 and Illinois held off visiting Michigan 91-87 in double overtime Thursday night in Champaign.

Mayer opened the second overtime with a three-pointer and a layup, and the Fighting Illini (20-10, 11-8 Big Ten) never trailed again.

Mayer made 8 of 20 shots with four threepoint­ers and added seven rebounds. Shannon sank only 4 of 14 shots — missing all five of his three-point attempts — but he made 13 of 16 free throws, including 3 of 4 in the final 10 seconds to preserve the win.

Ty Rodgers pitched in with 14 points and seven boards off the bench for Illinois, while RJ Melendez scored 10 of his 12 in the second half.

Hunter Dickinson finished with 31 points and a career-high 16 rebounds to lead the Wolverines (17-13, 11-8).

Purdue 63, Wisconsin 61

Zach Edey had 17 points and 19 rebounds as the No. 5 Boilermake­rs outlasted the host Badgers.

Purdue (25-5, 14-5) already had clinched the Big Ten regular-season title outright before the end of this game by virtue of Illinois’ victory over Michigan.

Max Klesmit scored 19 points and Chucky Hepburn 13 for Wisconsin (16-13, 8-11). Fletcher Loyer had 13 for Purdue.

Minnesota 75, Rutgers 74

Jamison Battle hit a buzzer-beating threepoint­er and finished with 20 points as Minnesota beat visiting Rutgers to snap a 12-game losing streak. Battle’s game-winning shot capped a 15-4 run in the final 1:15 for Minnesota’s only lead of the game.

Dawson Garcia added 19 points and Pharrel Payne 15 for Minnesota (8-20, 2-16 Big Ten). Clifford Omoruyi scored 23 points and grabbed 11 rebounds to lead Rutgers (18-12, 10-9). Cam Spencer added 21 points.

WOMEN

Illinois 81, Rutgers 55

Makira Cook scored 24 points, Genesis Bryant added 21 and Illinois shot 60% from the floor (34-for-57) in beating Rutgers in the second round of the Big Ten Tournament in Minneapoli­s.

The Fighting Illini (22-8) play No. 3 seed Maryland in the quarterfin­als Friday.
