OSU surprises Iowa at United Center
Bruce Thornton scored 17 points, and Roddy Gayle Jr. tallied all nine of his points in the last six minutes — including a tiebreaking threepointer with 3½ minutes left — to help 13th-seeded Ohio State upset fifth-seeded Iowa 73-69 in the second round of the Big Ten tournament Thursday at the United Center.
Freshman star Brice Sensabaugh added 16 points, Justice Sueing 14 and Sean McNeil 13 for the Buckeyes (15-18), who will play fourth-seeded Michigan State in the quarterfinals Friday.
Filip Rebraca scored 20 points, Kris Murray 17 and Tony Perkins 16 for the Hawkeyes (19-13).
Rutgers 62, Michigan 50
Cam Spencer and Derek Simpson scored 23 of their combined 31 points in the second half, and the ninth-seeded Scarlet Knights (19-13) topped the eighth-seeded Wolverines (17-15) in the second round of the Big Ten tournament.
Spencer scored 18 points and Simpson 13 for Rutgers, which shot 52% in the second half after shooting 29% in the first. The Scarlet Knights will play top-seeded Purdue in the quarterfinals Friday.
Hunter Dickinson scored 24 points for Michigan, which had only one basket in the second half until the final minute.
Maryland 70, Minnesota 54
Donta Scott scored 20 points, and the sixth-seeded Terrapins (21-11) rolled past the 14th-seeded Golden Gophers (9-22) to set up a quarterfinal matchup against thirdseeded Indiana in the Big Ten tournament. Pharrel Payne led Minnesota with 17 points.
Marquette 72, St. John’s 70
Tyler Kolek scored all 19 of his points after halftime, including the tiebreaking free throws with 15.8 seconds left in overtime, and the No. 6 Golden Eagles (26-6) survived the Red Storm (18-15) in the Big East quarterfinals in New York.
Ewing out at Georgetown
Patrick Ewing was fired as the coach Georgetown, his alma mater, after six seasons. He never had been a head coach at any level until getting the job with the Hoyas in 2017, and he leaves with a 75-109 record, including a 7-25 mark this season.
Self to miss Big 12 tourney
Kansas coach Bill Self will miss the Big 12 tournament after going to the emergency room Wednesday for what doctors called ‘‘a standard procedure,’’ and it’s uncertain whether he will be back for the NCAA Tournament.
