JACKSON-DAVIS LEADS INDIANA TO SEMIFINALS
Trayce Jackson-Davis had 24 points, nine rebounds, seven assists and four blocks, and No. 19 Indiana beat Maryland 70-60 in the quarterfinals of the Big Ten tournament on Friday night at the United Center.
The third-seeded Hoosiers (22-10) went on a 20-2 run in the second half to wipe out a seven-point deficit and got payback for a loss against the Terrapins (21-12) on Jan. 31. They will face No. 10 seed Penn State in the semifinals on Saturday.
Indiana trailed 41-34 early in the second half when Miller Kopp hit a three to start the decisive run. Tamar Bates brought the crowd to its feet when he buried a three to make it 54-43 with 9:36 left, and the Hoosiers were never really threatened after that. It was a six-point game with just over two minutes remaining when Jalen Hood-Schifino nailed a three to seal the win for Indiana.
OHIO STATE 68, Michigan State 58
Bruce Thornton had 21 points and six assists, freshman Roddy Gayle Jr. scored seven of his season-high 15 points in the final five minutes and the short-handed Buckeyes beat the fourth-seeded Spartans in the quarterfinals of the Big Ten tournament.
The Buckeyes (16-18) became the lowest seed, at No. 13, to ever reach the Big Ten semifinals. Ohio State will face top-seeded Purdue on Saturday.
The Buckeyes were without leading scorer Brice Sensabaugh because of knee soreness. But Gayle had 12 points in the second half to make up for Sensabaugh’s absence. Gayle extended Ohio State’s lead to 51-39 on a three-pointer with 8:05 remaining.
Joey Hauser led the Spartans (19-12) with 15 points.
PURDUE 70, RUTGERS 65
Mason Gillis had 20 points on 7-for-8 shooting with nine rebounds, and the No. 5 Boilermakers held off the Scarlet Knights for a rugged victory in the Big Ten tourney quarterfinals.
With Zach Edey (16 points and 11 rebounds) drawing his usual attention inside, the top-seeded Boilermakers (27-5) got a big lift from Gillis and reserve guard David Jenkins Jr., who had a season-high 12 points.
Derek Simpson had 18 points to lead the Scarlet Knights (19-14).
