Shannon, Illini roll past Southern U.
Terrence Shannon Jr. scored 17 of his 24 points in the first half, Dain Dainja added 12 points and Quincy Guerrier had 10 to lead No. 23 Illinois to an 88-60 rout of Southern on Sunday night in Champaign.
A 17-point run in the final five minutes of the first half gave Illinois a 45-27 lead at the break. The Illini (4-1) weren’t threatened by the Jaguars (1-4) in the second half, extending their lead to as many as 34 points.
The Illini were without starting power forward Coleman Hawkins (sore knee) for the second consecutive game. Backup point guard Niccolo Moretti suffered a sprained ankle late in the first half and didn’t return.
Ty Berry scored 14 points and Brooks Barnhizer and Ryan Langborg each added 13, but Northwestern (4-1) lost 66-57 to Mississippi State (5-0) in the final of the Basketball Hall of Fame TipOff in Uncasville, Connecticut.
Da’Sean Nelson and Chico Carter each scored 15 points, but DePaul (1-4) lost 70-54 to San Francisco (3-2) in the Arizona Tip-Off in Glendale.
Jaden Brownell scored 14, and UIC (3-1) defeated Division III Aurora 99-48 at Credit Union 1 Arena.
Phillies re-sign Nola for $172 million
The Phillies re-signed right-hander Aaron Nola, 30, to a seven-year, $172 million contract. Nola was the seventh player taken in the 2014 MLB Draft, the year that the Sox took Carlos Rodon third and the Cubs took Kyle Schwarber fourth.
Nola made at least 32 starts and pitched at least 180‰ innings in five of the last six years — the exception was the pandemic-shortened 2020 season. He went 12-9 with a 4.46 ERA in 32 starts this year, finishing with 202 strikeouts in 193‰ innings.
