Mahomes’ dad hit with 6th DWI charge

- Sun-Times wires

Pat Mahomes Sr., the father of Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes and a former reliever for the Cubs, was arrested Saturday in Tyler, Texas, on a charge of driving while intoxicated, according to online jail records.

Mahomes, 53, is facing a charge of Driving While Intoxicated 3rd Or More. He was released from the Smith County Jail on Sunday after posting a $10,000 bond.

The charge is a third-degree felony and, by Texas law, carries a sentence of up to 10 years in prison if he is convicted.

According to Us magazine, this was the sixth time Mahomes — who had a 3.86 ERA in 16 games for the Cubs in 2002 — has been arrested for the offense. He also was arrested in March 2012, September 2013, April 2018, November 2018 and March 2019.

The arrest came eight days before his son is set to lead the Chiefs against the 49ers in Super Bowl LVIII in Las Vegas.

Commanders land Kingsbury as OC

Multiple outlets reported the Commanders are hiring former Cardinals coach Kliff Kingsbury to be their offensive coordinator. He had agreed last week to become the Raiders’ offensive coordinator, but he pulled his name from consideration Saturday after contract talks stalled.

Kingsbury, who spent this past season as quarterbacks coach at USC, was the first hire for new Commanders coach Dan Quinn, who later reportedly hired Cowboys secondary coach Joe Whitt Jr. as defensive coordinator.

Belichick thanks fans in newspaper ad

Coach Bill Belichick took out a full-page ad in the Boston Globe to thank fans for their support during his time on the Patriots’ sideline.

‘‘For 24 years, I was blessed to feel your passion and your power,’’ the ad said. ‘‘Six times, you packed Boston by the millions for parades that were truly a two-way expression of gratitude and love. The images from those days are burned in my memory.’’

Belichick coached the Patriots to six Super Bowl titles, but three losing seasons in the last four — including a 4-13 record this season — led to his departure.
