Yanks put Sox back in their place

NEW YORK — The 11-8 stretch that applied a needed, soothing balm on the White Sox’ 3-22 start collided head-on with the streaking Yankees.

The result wasn’t surprising. The Yankees (33-15), behind the pitching of former Sox lefthander Carlos Rodon and two short-porch home runs, won 7-2 to complete a three-game sweep Sunday. It was the seventh sweep the Sox (14-33) have endured in the first seven weeks of the season.

Right-hander Chris Flexen allowed seven runs and eight hits in four-plus innings, including homers to Jon Berti and Aaron Judge. They carried 366 and 339 feet over the right-field wall, respectively, but such are the perils of Yankee Stadium.

‘‘That’s the way the park plays, no excuses on that,’’ manager Pedro Grifol said.

‘‘They are in first place for a reason, but four innings [and] seven runs, that’s dog [crap] anywhere,’’ said Flexen (2-4), whose ERA rose to 5.48. ‘‘Very frustrated with today, and I failed to do my job.’’

The Sox, who are last in the majors with 34 homers, were out-homered 8-1 in the series.

Rodon (5-2, 3.27 ERA) yielded two runs in six innings, striking out six.

Julks hits, takes away homer

Corey Julks, starting his second game of the series after the Sox acquired him in a trade with the Astros, reached base three times, homered and took a homer away from Jose Trevino with a leap at the left-field wall.

According to Sports Info Solutions, Julks joined Luis Robert Jr., Eloy Jimenez, Adam Engel and Jermaine Dye as the only Sox outfielders in the last 20 years to hit a homer and take away a homer in the same game.

Keller to be DFA’d

With reliever Dominic Leone (tightness in lower back) expected to come off the 15-day injured list Monday, right-hander Brad Keller will be designated for assignment, a source told the Sun-Times.

Keller allowed four home runs Saturday against the Yankees in his first start after replacing righthander Michael Soroka in the rotation.

Soroka, who pitched four scoreless innings and struck out seven in relief Saturday, might return to the rotation.

N.Y. homecomings

Danny Mendick and Zach Remillard grew up in the New York area and were Yankees fans as kids. Remillard played in two games at second base and Mendick in all three at third over the weekend.

‘‘It’s amazing,’’ Mendick, a big Derek Jeter fan growing up, said of Yankee Stadium. ‘‘You watch them on TV as a kid, and then to play on the field, knowing the history and all the Hall of Fame players, it’s cool.’’

Remillard walked twice Friday and tripled in a run Sunday, but he was picked off second Friday and off third Sunday.

Mendick went hitless in the first two games and doubled Sunday. He also lined out hard to Rodon.

Ramos headed to Charlotte

Third baseman Bryan Ramos ran through more drills and got the green light to begin a rehab assignment for his strained left quad. Triple-A Charlotte is off Monday, so Ramos’ first game back there will be Tuesday. He could come off the 10-day IL on Saturday.

Robert update

Robert (strained hip flexor) still is awaiting his first action at the Sox’ complex in Glendale, Arizona.

‘‘We anticipate some game action later this week,’’ general manager Chris Getz said. ‘‘He seems to have turned the corner and is trending well.’’
