Seattle, Toronto set for MLS Cup final
The team that helped changed the scope of Major League Soccer when it arrived a decade ago will host the MLS Cup final for the first time when the Seattle Sounders face Toronto FC.
It’s the third meeting between the clubs in the past four years for the league championship. The venue has changed from those previous two title games, both in Toronto with each club winning once.
The Sounders weren’t expected to play for the title. Instead, they will be buoyed by what’s expected to be the second-largest crowd for an MLS Cup final — in excess of 69,000.
■ The U.S. women’s national team has been granted class status in its lawsuit against U.S. Soccer that alleges gender discrimination in compensation and working conditions. A U.S. district court judge’s ruling expands the case beyond the 28 players who originally brought the lawsuit to include all players called up to camp or who played in a game over a multiyear period . ... American midfielder Christian Pulisic scored his fifth goal in three Premier League games as Chelsea beat Crystal Palace 2-0.
College basketball: Top-ranked Oregon stunned the U.S. women’s national team 93-86 to hand the Americans’ their second loss to a college team in program history. The other loss came against Tennessee in 1999 . ... Filip Petrusev scored a career-high 25 points on 9-for-10 shooting as No. 8 Gonzaga (2-0) beat Arkansas-Pine Bluff 110-60 . ... Romaro Gill had 10 points and 10 assists as No. 12 Seton Hall withstood an ankle injury to Myles Powell and beat Stony Brook 74-57 in a game that marked the return of Pirates coach Kevin Willard. Seton Hall (2-0) announced Oct. 29 that the NCAA is investigating the program and Willard would sit out two games. The school said it was cooperating but didn’t specify what the NCAA was investigating.
Football: Pete Carroll told ESPN.com said there’s a “good chance” WR Josh Gordon makes his Seahawks debut Monday night against the 49ers. Gordon was waived by the Patriots on Oct. 31.
Golf: Jeff Maggert kept the lead in the Charles Schwab Cup Championship after he birdied the par-5 18th for a 2-under 69 and a one-stroke lead over Miguel Angel Jimenez with one round left in the season finale at Phoenix Country Club . ... Japan’s Ai Suzuki shot a bogey-free 7-under 65 to take a three-stroke lead after the second round of the LPGA Japan Classic in Shiga, Japan. Suzuki had seven birdies to finish at 12-under 132 heading into the third round . ... Austria’s Matthias Schwab leads by three shots after a 6-under 66 after three rounds of the Turkish Airlines Open in Antalya, Turkey. England’s Eddie Pepperell was disqualified when he ran out of golf balls. He hit as many as five balls into the water on the par-5 fourth hole at the Montgomerie Maxx Royal course.
