North Dakota State wins 8th FCS title

Redshirt freshman quarterbac­k Trey Lance ran for 166 yards, with a clutch 44-yard touchdown to start the fourth quarter, and North Dakota State held on to claim its eighth FCS national championsh­ip with a 28-20 win over James Madison on Saturday in Frisco, Texas.

James Hendricks had an intercepti­on at the goal line in the final seconds for the Bison (16-0), who stretched their FCSrecord winning streak to 37 in a row and completed the first 16-win season in any division since Yale in 1894.

Golf: Brendan Steele went from lagging behind to seizing control in the Sony Open in Honolulu, when he birdied his last three holes for a 6-under 64 to take a three-shot lead over Cameron Smith into the final round . ... Louis Oosthuizen is on course to defend his title at the South African Open and takes a one-shot lead into the final round in Johannesbu­rg. Oosthuizen shot 7-under 64 in the third round at Randpark Golf Club to move to 15 under par overall and hold a narrow advantage over Marcus Armitage . ... Wade Ormsby continued his impressive run at the Hong Kong Open with a 4-under 66 to take a two-shot lead over Gunn Charoenkul.

NFL: Former Steelers coach Bill Cowher has been elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Cowher, an analyst for CBS, was surprised by the announceme­nt made live on air in studio before the Titans-Ravens playoff game. Hall President and CEO David Baker delivered the news to Cowher during CBS’s “The NFL Today” pregame show broadcast.

Tennis: Rafael Nadal rallied to beat Alex de Minaur 4-6, 7-5, 6-1 to clinch Spain’s semifinal win over Australia and secure a spot in the inaugural ATP Cup decider against Serbia. Top-ranked Nadal and his Spanish team will face Novak Djokovic’s Serbian team Sunday for the first title in the new 24-team internatio­nal tournament.

Women’s college basketball: Megan Walker scored 22 points and Christyn Willimas had 21 as top-ranked UConn responded to its first loss of the season with a 91-51 rout of Houston. The Huskies (13-1, 4-0 American) have gone 975 games over 27 years without losing twice in a row.
