Reform missing from‘FairTax’

-

Contrary to the assertions by the proponents of the “fair tax” amendment, there is nothing in this amendment that requires:

■ Income taxes to go down (or stay even) for 97% of taxpayers.

■ The revenue will be used to reduce property taxes.

■ The revenue will be used to improve education and health care.

■ The revenue will be used to reduce debt.

■ The state to be fiscally prudent.

As proposed, I don’t expect to be immediately affected if Gov. J.B. Pritzker’s amendment passes, but I knowit will only be amatter of time before it does. Itwon’t be long before the middle class and retirees are told they too must pay their “fair share” and see their “introductory” tax rate disappear.

This is truly a one-sided deal that gives the state further taxing power without any reform of its spending.
