HEALTHCARE >> Give thanks

- — Marco Buscaglia, Careers

You just finished an amazing interview for the job of your dreams. Now what?

Before you start celebrating your can’t-miss hiring, spend a few minutes crafting a thank-you note to your interviewer.

Amanda Augustine, career expert for TopResume, a New York-based resumewriting service, says a well-crafted email within 24 hours of a successful job interview could be the tipping point that catapults you to the top — or the bottom — of the finalist pool.”

If you’re unclear about thank-you note protocol, we asked Augustine to clarify some of the basics:

Who gets a thank-you note if you interviewed with more than one person?

“Send a thank-you note within 24 hours of your interview to each person with whom you meet. Since some companies have their employees forward a copy of the thank-you messages they receive to HR and attach them to a candidate’s file, be sure to personalize each message you send,” Augustine says.

What can be done to make sure the interviewer remembers you?

“Use details you learned about the interviewer during the initial small talk to personalize your note,” Augustine says. “This not only demonstrates your attention to detail, but it also makes your note memorable.”

What else should a note include?

“If you have an achievement, experience or qualification you think is highly relevant to the job’s requirements, but you didn’t get a chance to mention during the interview, mention it in your thank-you note,” Augustine says.

Does an email thank-you suffice, or should candidates send an actual note?

“In today’s fast-paced society, an email thank-you is not only acceptable but expected by a majority of employers,” Augustine says.
