Armed woman shot during clash with cops
An armed woman was shot multiple times during a confrontation involving Chicago police officers on theWest Side on Saturday afternoon.
It marked the second shooting of the day involving police after Evanston police fired their weapons during an incident that left one person dead and at least two others wounded. Chicago police spokesman Tom Ahern was on the scene of both shootings, he said.
The Chicago police-involved shooting happened about 3:30 p.m. in the 1500 block of South Karlov Avenue, in the city’s Lawndale neighborhood, according to Ahern.
In a statement, police said it began when Community Safety Team officers conducted an investigation on an illegally parked vehicle parked in a tow zone thatwas containing three occupants, including awoman.
“The female occupant began exhibiting characteristics of an armed person. Shortly thereafter, officers observed the female armed with a handgun which prompted an armed confrontation between police and the suspect,” the statement said.
She suffered multiple gunshot wounds and was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, but her condition was not made available.
Two additional suspects have been taken into custody and were currently being questioned by police.
The woman’s gun was recovered on scene. “Offender’s firearm recovered at scene,” Ahern tweeted.
Two ambulances had been sent to the scene to tend to two victims, according to Chicago Fire Department spokesman Larry Langford.
“One was for stress and one was for a gunshot,” Langford said. Civilian Office of Police Accountability spokesman Ephraim Eaddy, whowas also on the scene, confirmed an officer fired a gun but had no further details immediately.
The officer or officers involved will be placed on routine administrative duties for a period of 30 days and the shooting remains under investigation.
