Cop has bond revoked after alleged attack

- By Jason Meisner

A federal judge on Friday revoked bond for a suspended Chicago police officer charged in a sports gambling scheme after prosecutors revealed the officer’s girlfriend accused him of trying to kill her during an incident at a hotel last week.

U.S. District Judge Virginia Kendall said she was concerned about Stella’s previous domestic violence arrests, including one from 2019 when he allegedly punched the same woman in the mouth and threatened to get his gun and shoot her if she left him.

Stella, 43, a 19-year veteran of the force, has been free on bond since being charged in February 2020 with working as one of the top agents for an illegal gambling organization. Also charged in the alleged scheme was Casey Urlacher, the brother of Chicago Bears legend Brian Urlacher. He was pardoned by President Donald Trump on Wednesday.

Prosecutors moved to revoke Stella’s bond after he was accused last weekend of attacking his longtime girlfriend. He has not been criminally charged in that alleged incident.

A police spokeswoman said Friday that Stella is currently on an “unpaid leave of absence” from the department.
