OLB coach Monachino not expected to return

- By Brad Biggs

A day after promoting Sean Desai to defensive coordinator, the Bears have a new opening on coach Matt Nagy’s staff.

Outside linebackers coach Ted Monachino is not expected to return. Monachino was with the Bears for the last two seasons, arriving in 2019 with defensive coordinator Chuck Pagano.

The Bears need to hire a defensive line coach — Jay Rodgers left for a job with the Los Angeles Chargers — and presumably will fill Monachino’s role as well as the position Desai held as safeties coach.

The Bears could replace Desai, who was promoted Saturday, with an assistant defensive backs coach.

It’s possible the team could promote Bill Shuey, who held the title of pass rush analyst/assistant linebackers this season.

The Bears were pursuing James Bettcher, who interviewed for the defensive coordinator role, but the San Francisco 49ers hired him.

It’s not known whether Bettcher would have been offered a role as a senior defensive assistant or as a position coach, but he’s no longer in play.

Other coaches who have departed are passing game coordinator Dave Ragone and running backs coach Charles London.
