AROUND THE HORN

-

Braves: Ronald Acuna Jr., who shares the major league lead with 10 home runs, left the game against the Phillies on Saturday night after being hit by a pitch. Acuna was hit on his left hand by a 98 mph fastball from Sam Coonrod in the seventh inning. The pitch appeared to hit Acuna’s little finger on the bottom of the bat. Acuna fell back, holding his hand in obvious pain. The Braves said X-rays on the finger were negative. Acuna is day to day with a contusion. He missed two games in April with a mild abdominal strain and is hitting .313. Rangers: Khris Davis was activated from the injured list Saturday, marking the slugger’s first time on the Rangers’ active roster for a game since being acquired in trade that sent longtime shortstop Elvis Andrus to the Athletics. Davis, an outfielder and designated hitter, opened the season on the injured list because left quad strain suffered in a spring training game March 23. The Rangers got Davis, catcher Jonah Heim, and a minor league pitcher from the A’s just before spring training Feb. 6 when it sent Andrus to the West Coast. Heim was in the starting lineup for Saturday night’s game against the Mariners, but Davis was not. To make room on the active roster for Davis, outfielder Eli White was optioned to Triple-A Round Rock.

Cardinals: Yadier Molina drove in three runs in his return from the injured list, Paul Goldschmidt homered and in a 9-8 victory over the Rockies. Goldschmidt also had three RBIs and Nolan Arenado hit another double against his former team. The Cardinals have won eight straight and 14 of their last 15 games against the Rockies at Busch Stadium. Molina hadn’t played since April 26 because of a strained tendon in his right foot. The All-Star catcher was leading the Cardinals in batting, homers and RBIs when he was hurt.

Yankees: Gleyber Torres’ tying single in the ninth inning and a winning infield single in the 11th helped the Yankees overcame Max Scherzer’s commanding 14-strikeout performance to beat the Nationals 4-3. Scherzer allowed two hits in 7 ⅓ innings, but the Yankees rallied three times. It was Scherzer’s 100th game with 10 or more strikeouts — Nolan Ryan, Randy Johnson, Roger Clemens and Pedro Martinez are the only other pitchers to accomplish the feat. Kyle Higashioka’s home run tied the score at 1 in the third, Torres made it 2-all against Brad Hand in the ninth and Mike Ford’s single evened it 3-3 against Hand in the 10th.

Athletics: Seth Brown may sit again Sunday against a left-handed starter and await his chance to help off the bench if regular right fielder Stephen Piscotty returns to the lineup. Manager Bob Melvin hadn’t made a decision yet. Brown sure is capitalizing on every opportunity he does get. He hit a two-run homer in the first inning a day after delivering a walkoff drive, sending the Athletics past the Rays again with a 6-3 win Saturday. “Been unbelievable, the last two days, if we don’t have him, probably a good chance we don’t win the game,” Melvin said. Brewers: Adrian Houser struck out 10 in six innings and homered off Daniel Castano for the second time this season, and the Brewers snapped a six-game losing streak by beating the Marlins 6-2. Avisail Garcia added his fourth home run for the Brewers, who improved to 1-5 on their seven-game trip. The losing streak was their longest since July 2018.
