A tale of two sandal quandaries

- Ellen Warren Answer Angel

Dear Answer Angel Ellen: How can I persuade my partner that his feet are too ugly to wear sandals that show his gnarly toes?

— Brenda J.

And this …

Dear Answer Angel Ellen: My husband and I took a walk on the beach. I kid you not: He was wearing his black leather laced business shoes. He refuses to wear sandals because he is embarrassed by the unkempt condition of his feet. He looked ridiculous. How to convince him nobody is looking at his feet?

— Shavon L. Dear Brenda and Shavon: For many adults, the feet are among our least attractive body parts. Brenda, your partner doesn’t care. Shavon, your husband cares too much. (Leather shoes on the beach?)

There are good solutions for both of you. Aqua socks, also called sand shoes or water shoes, are wellpriced options for beach and pool. Amazon.com has a wide array starting at $10. They cover the entire foot.

For something more substantial, Merrell and Keen make sporty closedtoe sandals, and an online search turns up multiple leather sandal brands that also conceal gnarly toes.

Dear Answer Angel Ellen: I haven’t used any of my lipsticks or lip glosses while wearing a mask in public. Is it still safe to use these products now, after they’ve been sitting in my makeup bag for well over a year?

I often wonder if the cosmetic companies create short timeframes in replacement guidelines for the sole purpose of making money. What is your advice on the safe use of lipstick during these times?

— Maria V. Dear Maria: The conventional wisdom is you should toss lipstick after a year. I violate that “rule” quite often and have had no problems. I pitch my lipsticks if they’re dried out, too mushy or too waxy. But bacteria can be an issue, and the conservative approach says follow the manufacturer’s expiration guidelines. Like you, I too have wondered whether expiration dates on cosmetics is a bit of a money grab by the makers.

Angelic Readers

Nancy W. writes, “I need your readers’ help. I am 5 foot, 3 inches and wear size 18 or 2X in most women’s clothes although standardization in women’s clothes leaves a lot to be desired. My problem is everything is too long, like tunic length. If I buy a T-shirt or blouse to fit my hips it comes down almost to my knees. I want to be able to wear a dress or casual pants with them. I’m not a fan of leggings, especially when it’s hot out. I have even tried men’s T-shirts, but again, too long. I have tried petite departments in stores, but most don’t come big enough. Is there a line of casual clothing somewhere that caters to the short and wide? I don’t want expensive clothes, just something that fits.”
