AROUND THE HORN

-

Rays: Joey Wendle hit three doubles and a single, keying two big innings that sent the Rays past the Mets 12-5 Saturday. Yandy Diaz, who had two of Tampa Bay’s eight doubles, and Randy Arozarena each had three hits.

Angels: Looking to bolster the majors’ worst pitching staff, the Angels acquired right-handed reliever Hunter Strickland from the Rays on Saturday for a player to be named or cash. The 32-year-old Strickland has a 1.69 ERA in 16 innings with the Rays this season.

Phillies: Phillies star Bryce Harper left Saturday night’s game against the Blue Jays in the fourth inning due to right shoulder soreness. The team said Harper is day to day.

Red Sox: Alex Verdugo hit a solo homer in his first at-bat on his 25th birthday, Xander Bogaerts also went deep with a game-breaking, three-run shot and the Red Sox beat the stumbling Angels 9-0 on Saturday.

Twins: Miguel Sanó snapped a 19-game homerless drought with a threerun homer in the eighth inning and the Twins came back to beat the Athletics 5-4 on Saturday. Sanó pounded his chest and gestured to his teammates as he rounded the bases after his homer off Oakland left-hander Jake Diekman just reached the overhang in right field. Sanó was hitting just .114 this season before the homer, which was just his second of the year and first since the third game of the season. It was the big hit Minnesota needed to snap its five-game losing streak. The Twins had been 2 for 10 with runners in scoring position on Saturday before Sanó’s homer.

Braves: Ian Anderson took a no-hit try into the seventh inning, Freddie Freeman hit a two-run homer and the Braves beat the Brewers 5-1 on Saturday night. Anderson cruised through the first six innings, mixing a 96 mph fastball, an effective changeup and an even slower curveball that kept the Brewers guessing. The 23-year-old righthander walked four and struck out four before the Brewers ended Anderson’s bid in the seventh.

Yankees: Aaron Judge homered for the third time in two games, Domingo Germán had another stellar outing at Camden Yards and the Yankees beat the Orioles 8-2 on Saturday night.

Giants: Jacob Stallings hit a two-out, two-run homer in the ninth inning and the Pirates rallied past the Giants 8-6 on Saturday night. Stallings had a two-out, two-run double that capped four-run comeback in the seventh that made it 6-all. Adam Frazier singled to lead off the the Pirates ninth and was thrown out at the plate when he tried to score on Bryan Reynolds’ one-out double. Reynolds took third on the play, and trotted home when Stallings sent a drive into the bleachers off Jake McGee.

Astros: Carlos Correa and Kyle Tucker each homered to help Luis Garcia earn his first career win as the Astros held on to beat the Rangers 6-5 on Saturday for their fifth straight win. Correa capped a four-run first with a two-run homer to right as the Astros got to starter Dane Dunning. Alex Bregman also had a two-run single in the inning.

Blue Jays: Vladimir Guerrero Jr. homered and five Blue Jays pitchers combined on a six-hitter to beat the Phillies 4-0 Saturday night. It was Guerrero’s 10th homer, a first-inning solo shot off Aaron Nola. The drive to right was Guerrero’s sixth to the opposite field.
