AROUND THE HORN

-

MLB: There was a big number reached in Major League Baseball during the Padres’ 16-1 blowout over the Mariners, and it had nothing to do with runs. Because when Mariners backup catcher José Godoy made his big league debut Friday night, he became the 20,000th player in MLB history. There was no fanfare at Petco Park when Godoy came in to catch in the bottom of the sixth inning with the Mariners trailing 12-1. The 26-yearold from Venezuela who signed with the Cardinals in 2011 and joined the Seattle system last winter grounded out and walked in his two plate appearances. But to fans who had been tracking the procession to 20,000 on the Twitter postings by the web site Céspedes Family BBQ, it was a big deal. The list of big leaguers began in 1871 and ranges from A to Z — there has never been a player whose last name started with X, although there have been several with first names that start that way, including Red Sox star Xander Bogaerts.

Yankees: Gerrit Cole shook off rare control problems to pitch four-hit ball over seven innings and give the Yankees their most dominant stretch of starting pitching in 89 years, leading the Yanks over the White Sox 7-0 Saturday for a fivegame winning streak.

Blue Jays: The Blue Jays put third baseman Cavan Biggio on the 10-day injured list with a cervical spine ligament sprain on Saturday. Blue Jays manager Charlie Montoyo expects Biggio to be ready to return when eligible to come of the IL.

Brewers: Daniel Robertson hit his first home run in more than two years, a tiebreaking, seventh-inning drive in his second game back from a concussion, and the Brewers beat the Reds 4-3 Saturday.

Braves: Ozzie Albies hit home runs from both sides of the plate and Ronald Acuña Jr. led off with his major league-best 15th homer as the Braves again showed off their power game and beat the Pirates 6-1 on Saturday.

Mariners: Righthander Robert Dugger and left-hander Anthony Misiewicz were reinstated by the Seattle Mariners on Saturday, one day after they and two other relievers were placed on the COVID-19 injured list when the team reported a positive case in its traveling party. Righthanders Will Vest and Drew Steckenrider remain on the COVID IL.

Indians: A two-run homer from César Hernández in the 10th inning off Alex Colomé, giving the Indians a 5-3 victory over the Twins on Saturday.

Rockies: Charlie Blackmon hit a tiebreaking, two-run homer off Madison Bumgarner in a four-run sixth inning, left fielder Raimel Tapia made a dazzling catch to thwart a rally attempt and the Rockies beat the Diamondbacks 7-6 on Saturday.

Rangers: Adolis García kept up his home run barrage, connecting twice Saturday and helping power the Rangers past the Astros 8-4. García, who hit a threerun, walkoff drive in the 10th inning to beat the Astros 7-5 on Friday, had a solo homer in the fifth. The 28-year-old Cuban rookie added another solo shot in the seventh.

Marlins: With their bullpen depleted, the Marlins were one strike from a second consecutive extra-inning game when Garrett Cooper hit a two-run homer on a full count to beat the Mets 3-1 and avoid any need for more pitchers on Saturday.
