Gallagher, Maureen

-

Maureen Gallagher, nee Smith, 88, of Winnetka, IL, passed away June 19, 2021, joining her beloved husband of 56 years, William (Bill), who passed away October 2017.

She was born to the late Julia and Bernard Smith, on January 20, 1933, in Goose Creek, Texas. Maureen attended Holy Trinity school and Ursuline Academy of Dallas. She studied nursing and worked with the Daughters of Charity of St Vincent de Paul at

St Paul’s Hospital in Dallas prior to earning her nursing degree from the University of Texas. She taught nursing at Mary’s Help Hospital in San Francisco and later at St Francis Hospital in Evanston. Maureen was a lifelong proud Texan. As a result of the fact that the rest of the United States erroneously celebrated Thanksgiving on a day other than Texas’ Thanksgiving Day, Maureen would ultimately meet her future husband. After marrying Bill in 1961, Maureen moved to Chicago where people had

strange, non-Texan accents. She dedicated her life to her family, faith and home.

Maureen is survived by her seven children: Maureen (Randy) Burns, Moira (Chris) Minielly, Bill (Natalia),

Bernard, Michael (Joan), Tom (Kathleen), and Mary (Mark) Nomellini. She is also survived by her twelve grandchildren (William, Leonidas, Katherine, Sarah, Thomas, Caroline, Brian, John, Emmett, Mark, Mary

Arlene, and Pierce), many nieces and nephews, and her siblings Kathleen Schaffer, Aislin Nickey, Joan (Ron) Breuch, and John (Donna) Smith. She was preceded in death by her siblings Bernard (Josie), Thomas, and Una Smith.
