Renewing licenses

-

The editorial (“Need a driver’s license? Bring tailgate gear.,” July 2) regarding the lines for renewing driver’s licenses in Illinois does not begin to describe the frustration and anxiety someone older than 65 experiences trying to renew a license. My license expired this past March, but I did not attempt to work on a renewal until June because of the extension and concerns relating to COVID-19 and crowds.

I found out that age prohibited me from renewing online — though I do not have any violations on my record. I tried to call the driver services facility on Elston Avenue to ask about arrangements for older people. I was never successful in connecting with a person who could talk with me.

One morning, I took a ride past the facility because I had hoped to stop by to talk with someone about getting started and to inquire about the best time to appear if you are a senior. I could not get near the building because of the sea of people standing in line with their tailgate gear. Easily a two-hour wait despite the rain.

I feel that as an older person, I am being punished. It is my understanding that I am required to take the road test despite my good record and a successful test in the recent past. Many, if not most, people my age have not been driving very much during the past year — mainly trips to doctor appointments and grocery stores. Would it not have been more humane for the secretary of state to forgo the road test requirement for those of us who do not have violations on their records? We would then be able to renew online.

This makes trying to sign up early on for the COVID-19 shot seem like a piece of cake.
