Third suspect arrested in 2020 shooting death

- By Clifford Ward

A Calumet City man accused of two other people in last year’s armed robbery and killing of a Gurnee man was taken into custody Thursday, less than a block from the Lake County jail, the sheriff ’s office said.

Dalance M. Robinson, 21, of Paxton Avenue, was arrested Thursday in Waukegan near the intersection of Martin Luther King Drive and Washington Street, which is on the same block as the jail and the courthouse.

Authorities said they had developed information that Robinson might be in that area.

Detectives spotted Robinson, and he was taken into custody without incident, they said.

In a news release, State’s Attorney Eric Rinehart’s office said prosecutors believed Robinson might be near the courthouse Thursday and passed along the information to police. According to court files, Robinson has an active case related to a 2020 weapons arrest and is awaiting trial.

He is now charged with two other men in the May 29, 2020, killing of Elliot Jones, who was shot to death outside his home in the 36900 block of North Grandwood in what police say was an armed robbery.

He is the third person charged in Jones’ death. Donterrance Nixon, a Waukegan man, pleaded guilty to an armed robbery count last month in a negotiated plea in which he agreed to testify against Robinson and Jordae Wilson, also of Waukegan.

Authorities say Nixon and the victim were acquaintances, and that on June 8, 2020, Nixon texted Jones offering to sell him marijuana. Nixon, Robinson, and Wilson drove to Jones’ residence, but planned to rob Jones, police said. After the three men took Jones’ money and began to drive away, Jones grabbed onto the car, but Robinson shot him, prosecutors said.

The sheriff ’s office said Robinson is also charged with fleeing and eluding authorities for an incident in July in which police tried to stop his car in Waukegan. Robinson, though, drove off at high speed, authorities said.

Following his arrest, he was taken to the Lake County jail where he was being held in lieu of $5 million bail.

Wilson is also being held in jail awaiting trial. Nixon was sentenced in July to 12 years in prison for the armed robbery plea.
