Sign Guestbook at chicagotribune.com/obituaries Larry Hennelly of Los Angeles, formerly of Chicago, passed away peacefully at home in California on Saturday, July 3rd. He was the loving husband of Linda Hennelly for 48 years; beloved father to Sarah Hennelly (Adam Goldberg), and Brian Hennelly; cherished grandfather to Brendan and Maggie. Larry was the youngest of 7 children born to Margaret and Patrick Hennelly of County Mayo, Ireland and Chicago. He is survived by his sister Marge Reimann (the late Arch Reimann) and his sister-in-law Carol Hennelly (the late Donald Hennelly). He was preceded in death by his sister Patricia Mullaney (the late Tom Mullaney); Bernard Hennelly; James Hennelly (the late Nora Hennelly); Donald Hennelly; Jack Hennelly (the late Lori Hennelly). He was loved by 27 nieces and nephews. Larry graduated from St. Laurence School, Mendel Catholic High School, and Southern Illinois University. A south-sider from birth through his college years, he spent most of his adult life on Chicago’s north side, as a dedicated Chicago Cubs fan. One of his greatest joys was attending games with his family and friends, both in Chicago and in Los Angeles. Larry especially enjoyed his first teaching position at Cathedral High School in Chicago. He treasured his students there, as well as many of his colleagues who remained lifelong friends. He worked with other non-profit organizations including the First Unitarian Church, and the former Day School for students with special needs. Larry loved life and lived it largely, with gusto, and without regret. He enjoyed a good story, and could tell them with equal measures of irreverence and good humor. He loved gathering with family, and new and old friends, lifting spirits with his laughter and camaraderie. He shared his passions for history, architecture, travel, music, art, theater and Irish culture with all. He loved the beauty of Lake Michigan’s shoreline from Chicago to Grand Beach and Stevensville, Michigan. He loved the majesty of the oceans from California to Hawaii, Mexico and Ireland. He toasted the sunsets over every place he lived or traveled. He never knew a stranger, and never left a story untold. He was loved by all who knew him. Honoring Larry’s wishes, there were no services. Contributions in his memory can be made to: Na Piobairi Uilleann, a non-profit organization in Dublin, Ireland, dedicated to the promotion of the Irish Uilleann bagpipes and music. info@pipers.ie atreeinstead.org Planting trees to protect the environment epath.org People Assisting The Homeless
