Sullivan, Gloria P.

-

An uncommon woman, Gloria P. Sullivan truly lived her 90 years. Born August 15, 1932, in Mandan, ND to Philip and Eva Hertz, she left the world she found so intriguing on December 8, 2022. You may have met Gloria at one of the libraries where she spent her career. After graduating from St. Catherine University, St. Paul, MN in 1954 with a degree in library science she worked

in Decatur, IL then went to St. Mary’s University in Winona, MN where she met William J. Sullivan, married him, and had three beloved children. When she restarted her career in 1968 it was in the children’s department at the Winona Public Library. After moving to Wheaton, IL she found a job at the Elmhurst Public Library before going to the medical library at Central DuPage Hospital, staying there for 21 years and retiring in 2000. Her retirement allowed her to volunteer thousands of hours knitting shawls for CDH’s palliative care patients. Along the way she also found time to fill several leadership positions in the American Association of University Women, serve on the DuPage Symphony board, donate several gallons of blood, and practice her strong faith. When you met her, you would notice her wonderful smile, ready laugh and desire to help you. Gloria was very adaptable with a knack for planning ahead and enough sense to accept what happened when things went a different way. A voracious reader of fact and fiction, she liked to follow the news, classic movies, old time radio, good food, jigsaw puzzles in season, WTTW (except during pledge drives), a wide variety of music, and to learn new things. She loved her family and was grateful to have many friends. Gloria was preceded in death by her husband of 52 years Bill, her beloved sister Evelyn Hankins, and her parents. She is lovingly remembered by her children Bryan, Valerie Ann (Hans Lim) and Kennan; her niece D’Arlyn Bauer and her family; and a mixed bag of nieces and nephews.
