LaVine, DeRozan fuel win
The Bulls spoiled the homecoming of 2017 first-round draft pick Lauri Markkanen, muscling out a 126-118 win over the Utah Jazz on Saturday at the United Center.
It was a seesaw battle — the Bulls led by as many as 10 points, the Jazz by as many as eight. The Bulls improved to 12-13 against teams with a .500 record or better and won their third straight against the top-three teams from the East and West this week.
The highs
The Bulls scored the game’s first eight points and stayed ahead of the Jazz for the entirety of the first quarter. After struggling with sluggish starts throughout the first third of the season, the Bulls are continuing to improve their opening quarters to avoid early deficits. Fresh off making 11 3-pointers against the 76ers on Friday in Philadelphia, Zach LaVine continued his hot shooting against the Jazz. LaVine led the team with 36 points, shooting 12-for-21 overall and 6-for-12 from 3-point range. DeMar DeRozan added 35 points on 13-for-22 shooting as the star duo continues to click on the offensive end.
Coby White and Patrick Williams were all but absent in the first three quarters — White went scoreless on 0-for-4 shooting while Williams scored a single point on 0-for-7 shooting. But the pair erupted in the fourth quarter, combining for 11 straight points, including two 3-pointers from Williams and another from White to take a 103-101 lead with 7:32 remaining. White finished with five points and Williams seven.
The lows
Markkanen dominated around the rim, finishing with 28 points and four rebounds. The Bulls struggled to contain the forward’s athleticism, and Markkanen took advantage, smashing down seven dunks. Despite his 14-point first half, however, Markkanen couldn’t close the game for the Jazz, missing his final two attempts from 3-point range.
After the teams traded leads throughout the first half, the Jazz scored 40 points in the third quarter to take an 89-84 lead into the fourth. The Jazz shot 71.4% from the field in the third quarter. Markkanen capped the dominant quarter with his seventh dunk of the night, crushing the ball into the rim over Nikola Vučević.
While the Bulls’ Big Three — LaVine, DeRozan and Vučević (15 points, 16 rebounds) — combined for 86 points, the remainder of the roster struggled. The Bulls bench combined for 33 points. Meanwhile, the Jazz bench scored 42, led by Ochai Agbaji’s 19.

LaVine made 17 3-pointers in just more than 24 hours, dropping 11 against the 76ers on Friday and six more against the Jazz.
Coach Billy Donovan said his ideal would be to see LaVine take 10 to 15 shots from 3-point range per game. Although Donovan emphasized that LaVine can’t start “jacking up” shots, both he and DeRozan feel a higher volume of long-range shooting from LaVine will open up the rest of the Bulls offense.
“It’s scary because there’s going to be games where he shoots like he shot last night more times than not,” DeRozan said. “It’s scary when he gets that rhythm going like that. As long as Billy’s telling him to do that and not me, we’re good.”
