Chiefs get No. 1 seed; Jags win AFC South

-

Patrick Mahomes set the NFL record for most passing and rushing yards in a season, and the Chiefs rolled to a 31-13 victory over the Raiders on Saturday to lock up the AFC’s No. 1 seed.

Mahomes passed for 202 yards and rushed for 29 against the Raiders, giving him 5,608 total yards for the season. That surpassed the record of 5,562 yards set by Drew Brees in 2011 with the Saints. More than setting the mark, Mahomes helped ensure the top seed for the Chiefs (14-3) and a bye in the first round of the playoffs, which begin next weekend. The Chiefs, however, are not assured home-field advantage throughout the postseason.

Because Monday night’s Bills-Bengals game was canceled, the Chiefs could wind up playing the Bills or Bengals in the AFC championship on a neutral field.

The Jaguars won the AFC South thanks to a 20-16 win over the Titans on Saturday. Rayshawn Jenkins had a strip sack of quarterback Joshua

Dobbs, which was recovered by Josh Allen and returned for the Jaguars’ go-ahead TD with just under three minutes to go.

College basketball:

Mouhamed Gueye had 24 points and 14 rebounds, and Washington State ended No. 5 Arizona’s 28-game home winning streak with a 74-61 victory on Saturday.

Golf: Collin Morikawa seized on the stretch of scoring holes on the back nine at Kapalua to pull away from the elite field, making four birdies over his final five holes for an 8-under 65 and a six-shot lead in the Sentry Tournament of Champions.

Soccer: Welsh soccer club Wrexham thrilled its Hollywood owners by causing a big shock in the FA Cup on Saturday. A 4-3 win over Coventry in the third round of the famous old competition was Wrexham’s best result since the team, which plays in English soccer’s fifth tier, was taken over by Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney in November 2020.
