Measuring Lumber

-

You may think that lumber dimensions are pretty straightforward, but you’d be surprised. A 2x4 is 2 inches by 4 inches when it’s cut, but the drying process reduces it to 11⁄2 inches by 31⁄2 inches.

The same goes for plywood: it’s slightly smaller than nominal measurements indicate. So while some of my measurements might seem off, they’re actually taking this into account.

Keep this in mind as you measure:

 ?? ?? • 1x2 = 3⁄4 inch by
11⁄2 inches
• 1x4 = 3⁄4 inch by
31⁄2 inches
• 2x4 = 11⁄2 inches by
31⁄2 inches
• 1x2 = 3⁄4 inch by 11⁄2 inches • 1x4 = 3⁄4 inch by 31⁄2 inches • 2x4 = 11⁄2 inches by 31⁄2 inches
