Types of salmonellae infection include typhoid, paratyphoid and pullorum. You can avoid these by purchasing chicks or chickens from members of the National Poultry Improvement Plan. Additionally, many states require pullorum-typhoid-free certification for exhibition chickens entered in fairs or poultry shows, chickens sold at swap meets, or chickens transported from out of state.
