The greatest geopolitical event the world now witnesses is the spectacle of the former leading colonizers now practically being reduced to “colonies” of the United States as Washington pursues its interests to complete the domination of Europe and possibly even Eurasia.

Despite the visible decline of the US’ empire, Washington still exerts its power and influence over Europe and can only thank NATO for giving it a justifiable reason to remain in the continent.

The fall of the Soviet Union and the opening-up of China rightly ended the ideological conflict that divided the capitalist and socialist camps. Russia and China changed their approach toward each other and the format of their political systems.

The supporters of respective ideologies ended their costly crusades that threatened the extinction of humanity. Pragmatism gave way to China’s win-win approach.

This explains why the Soviet Union opted to disband the Warsaw Pact; but, unfortunately, this action was not reciprocated by the US. That exposed the truth that the US and

NATO had an agenda beyond their ideological differences to justify what many suspect is the American colonization of Europe.

In many ways, both Russia and China concentrated on free trade and the eradication of tariffs as the way to promote global prosperity.

Despite the West’s attempts to roll back the march of history, the economies of Russia and China more than doubled. The Chinese economy has made tremendous progress. It not only achieved a high degree of industrialization but wiped-out extreme poverty in a country with a population of 1.4 billion.

Its concept of socialism with Chinese characteristics debunked the bogey that socialism is the reason why economic development in some countries remains slow.

The two staunch advocates of socialism turned out to be more adept in embracing capitalist economic tools than those that claim to have practiced free enterprise. Today, the US economy is deeply mired in debt, owing about $1.2 trillion to China.

Still, the US has the gall to demand that Germany cancel its $11 billion Nord Stream 2 pipeline, because of the worsening relations with Russia over Ukraine, but not say who will pay the price if the US makes good on its threat to “severely sanction” Russia. This is notwithstanding the situation that the whole of Western Europe will face an acute energy shortage due to this policy of the US.

Maintaining NATO has become an effective disguise for the US to have a strong hold over Western Europe. As a dominant power, the US is almost able to operate freely in Europe using the leverage of the alliance to exact economic advantage in its trade relations with that continent.

Europe has become the dumping ground for costly and sophisticated US armaments, while Washington also demands a contribution from members of NATO that is the equivalent of 2 percent their GDP.

Russia’s demand for NATO to stop its eastward advance earns sympathy in China. This is because Beijing can see that the basis of Moscow’s demand is the peaceful economic liberation of Europe.

Currently, the US is unduly vexing Russia by enticing countries, that were former Soviet republics to join NATO — a move that Russia clearly sees as an immediate threat to its own security.

NATO’s eastward advance to the

Russian border undermines the basis of the US allegation that Russia is preparing to invade Ukraine. No country can ever be accused of mending its own fences to thwart an intruder. This was the same argument behind the US’ demand for the removal of the Soviet naval base from Cuba in 1962. The US anticipated the Soviet Union could use its base to launch an attack on the US which is barely 90 miles away.

At that time, the US asserted it would have no time to intercept Soviet missiles coming from Cuba, which is the same reasoning behind Russia’s demand that NATO reverse its eastward military expansion.

This is the anxiety that is expressed by Russian President Vladimir Putin when he demands the removal of NATO’s miliary infrastructure in Eastern Europe. The advent of hypersonic missiles mean these projectiles can reach Moscow within 5 to 7 minutes. NATO bases in Poland, Lithuania and Rumania pose a clear and present danger to Russia.
