Economy sees steady first quarter
China’s economy registered a steady start in the first quarter of the year, demonstrating its resilience and potential in the face of a complicated external environment and resurgent domestic COVID-19 cases.
Experts said the faster-thanexpected first-quarter growth was aided by robust growth in the first two months before a weakening in economic activities in March, and warned of challenges and uncertainties at both home and abroad.
China’s gross domestic product expanded 4.8 percent year-onyear to 27 trillion yuan ($4.24 trillion) in the first three months, picking up from 4 percent in the fourth quarter last year, according to the National Bureau of Statistics said on April 18.
Despite facing a complicated international situation and domestic COVID-19 cases, the fundamentals of China’s longterm sound economic growth remain unchanged, Fu Linghui, the bureau’s spokesman, said at a news conference in Beijing.
