Ex-senior official given life sentence
Du Shanxue, 60, former deputy governor of Shanxi province, was sentenced on Tuesday to life in prison for offering and taking bribes.
The verdict was given by the Xuzhou Intermediate People’s Court in Jiangsu province.
According to the court, Du and his wife took more than 80 million yuan ($11.5 million) in bribes between 2003 and 2013 when he was the top official of two cities in Shanxi and deputy governor of the coal-rich province.

In addition, Du could not explain how he and his family came into possession of property valued at 89.2 million yuan, the court said.
In August, Du stood trial, CANADA pleading guilty and expressing remorse in court for offering and receiving bribes.
Duadmitted takingmoney from 28 organizations, including an energy company, and from individuals in exchange for providing help with business matters and promotions.
The Central Commission for Discipline Inspection, the top anti-graft watchdog, said that in addition to accepting bribes, Du had also committed adultery.
