Poverty alleviation relocation programs are not just about moving. Follow-up measures are needed. The prefecture government has managed to provide an average of two jobs to each resettled family through “poverty alleviation” factories, rural tourism and welfare jobs. Through the training sessions, women who previously had no employment became traditional embroidery and batik craftswomen, earning between 2,000 ($310) and 3,000 yuan — an arrangement allowing them to take care of their family and learn a traditional technique at the same time. The former mountain dwellers have adapted well to the urban lifestyle, with schools, hospitals, buses and shopping malls at their doorstep. Hu Guozhen, deputy head of the Qiandongnan Miao and Dong autonomous prefecture in Guizhou province

Macao residents believe no one can stop the national rejuvenation. With a fusion of Chinese and Western cultures, Macao, as a port for opening-up, has always kept and highlighted the nature and characteristics of Chinese culture, which lays a key foundation for successfully implementing the principle of “one country, two systems” in this area. Chinese history is a compulsory course in Macao schools, while the preservation and inheritance of the nation’s traditions and culture are the mission and responsibility of the government of the Macao SAR. Zhang Zongzhen, member of Macao’s Executive Council

Access to basic education has greatly improved in the Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region in recent years. Thanks to the Communist Party of China and efforts made by educators in Xinjiang, more children from more places across the region have a chance to take the three-year preschool education. The regional government dispatched volunteers from different professions, including civil servants and teachers, to work as teachers in remote areas of southern Xinjiang. They have brought hope and happiness to more children there. As an educator, I am willing to pass on this love with everyone else. Gulpari Abdula, vice-president of Xinjiang Normal University

The Tibet autonomous region and the lives of the people living there have experienced great changes over the past seven decades under the leadership of the CPC. Over the past 70 years, Tibet has stepped out of the primitive society of agriculture and animal husbandry, and transformed into a society of industrialization and information. In December, with the completion of a power transmission and distribution project at the world’s highest altitude, the Ngari power grid is connected to the regional network. With the leadership of the CPC and the support of people all over the country, all the 628,000 registered poor Tibetan people were lifted out of poverty by last year, and their conditions in all aspects — whether it’s living, education, drinking water or access to medical treatment — have improved greatly. Losang Samtan, vice-chairman of the Ngari prefecture committee of the CPPCC
