TIMELESS STYLE
Doris Day’s pinstripe duds are in vogue!
Everything old is new again! Doris Day’s iconic style lives on in today’s stars
It feels like only yesterday that she stole our hearts playing Georgia Garrett in her silver-screen debut, Romance on the High Seas (1948). The ultimate girl next door, Doris Day (who celebrated her 92nd birthday this year!) made quite a splash with her nautical style. “She really understands color,” says celebrity fashion designer Domenico Vacca, who has dressed celebrities such as Ivana Trump and Arianna Huffington. “And even though her style evolved with the trends throughout the decades, there is a real consistency about it and an understanding of what worked best for her body, her personality and the times.”
This summer, Doris’ sailor style is making a comeback with the latest crop of supermodels. “The nautical look evokes a laid-back, carefree vibe while still being sophisticated,” says Vacca. To keep it from getting costumey, he suggests following Doris’ lead with a bold red blazer to add feminine flair.
Garcelle Beauvais, 49
High-waisted floorlength pants direct the eye up and down to elongate legs, while knotting a striped blouse at the waist helps slim. The perfect finishing touch: a blazer that rests on shoulders to create a relaxed look while carving out an hourglass.
Catherine Zeta-Jones, 46
The key to wearing stripes? Keep them the same width. The change from thin to thick on Catherine’s top highlights the stomach area — and no one wants more attention there! Toss in the buttons across the midsection and the ensemble adds 10 extra pounds.
Karlie Kloss, 23
This poor supermodel needs to send out an SOS: She’s drowning in pants! All that extra fabric adds a sense of heft where there is none. And the bomber jacket is conveying width that’s more linebacker than lady. Next time, Karlie, take a hint from Garcelle!
