Over the course of his career, Matthew McConaughey has starred in some amazing fact-based films — including Dallas Buyers Club and The Wolf of Wall Street. Now he’s back in truth-is-stranger-than-fiction territory with White Boy Rick, the real-life story of a petty criminal whose teenage son (Richie Merritt) became one of history’s youngest drug kingpins — and federal informants — in 1980s Detroit. “Richie’s going to knock your socks off,” says Matthew of his co-star, who’s never been in a film before. “It’s topnotch acting.” He’s certainly surrounded by heavyweight talent: Oscar nominees Bruce Dern (Coming Home, Nebraska) and Piper Laurie (Carrie) play Matthew’s parents, and Jennifer Jason Leigh (The Hateful Eight) appears as an FBI agent. The story “says a lot about America, poverty and the justice system,” adds Matthew, who has three children with wife Camila Alves. “This role, for me, is my sad country song. This guy, Rick Sr., wasn’t born into it and doesn’t quite have the tools to be as good of a dad as you need to be. He’s kind of a bad dad, but he cares about his kids and loves them a lot.” [R]

“I’m really proud of this movie,” saysMatthew, with Richie.
