“IT’S AMAZING that we’ve never worked together before,” Robert Redford tells Closer of Sissy Spacek, his leading lady in The Old Man & the Gun. “She was a joy.” The admiration is mutual. “He’s the consummate pro,” Sissy gushes to Closer. “He’s lightning in a bottle.” The only problem for the film’s writer-director, David Lowery, was to get Sissy to remember she was cast as a widow who falls for Forrest Tucker, a bank robber played by Robert. Says Sissy, “When we were doing our first scene together, David came over to me and said, ‘This is Forrest Tucker, not Robert Redford. Play a little hard to get!’” Robert had such a good time on the film, he’s walking back his previous comments that it might be his final film as an actor. “That was a mistake,” he says. “If I’m going to retire, I’ll just slip away quietly.”

“I had always wanted to work with him,” Sissy tells Closer of Robert. “He’s a gentleman — always prepared.”
